GOP should rethink Rainville campaign

Burlington Free Press | Letter to the Editor | Sept. 11, 2006

I am extremely concerned with the endorsement the Republican GOP is putting out for Martha Rainville. "Let's put Vermont's first woman into Congress" sounds more like the Republicans are going the affirmative action route as opposed to the principles and issues route.

Truth be told, the only political information we truly know about Rainville is that she is a woman that served in the military for approximately 21 years. Other than that, what? When she answers questions on big issues, she gives generic answers that give no insight of her plan of actions. Either she is too liberal to conform her answers to fit the Republican viewpoint or she is playing it safe by putting a pacifier into the Republican voters mouth. All other candidates, Republican, Democrats, etc., are giving us meat to grab onto -- except Rainville.

Her spokesperson states that she is detail oriented, supporters state that she is articulate but yet she is unable to "speak in 10 second sound bites"? My response is: Welcome to the big leagues!

Republican GOP are slapping us in the face as Republicans, belittling the intelligence of Vermonters and undermining those who served in the military, by making Martha Rainville their poster child; because she is a woman and was in the military. If we should vote for Rainville because we need a Republican woman in Congress to represent Vermont, then vote for me! I am not only a woman, but an African- American woman, under 40 years old, and I have principles!

"... many politicians talk the talk about doing something tangible about new jobs and it doesn't go much further. Sen. Shepard walked the walk."
"Sen. Shepard's big accomplishment, and it is a significant one, lies in the major role he played in bringing the Bennington Microtech Center into being."
